THE SCENE: The Beat Generation: Jack Kerouac, William S. Burroughs, John Clellon Holmes. Post World War II and Post McCarthyism era where there was an explosion of potential for American youth.

WHY WE LOVE HIM: His activism, ideas and overall spirit of non-conformity. He was openly gay and advocated for the rights of gay people.
