TAMA JANOWITZ
NAME: Tama Janowitz
OCCUPATION: Writer
HOMETOWN: San Francisco, California
YEARS IN NEW YORK: 30+. She moved to New York to attend Barnard and Columbia University.
KNOWN IN NEW YORK BECAUSE…: She’s made her mark on the literary world as an accomplice of the “brat pack” authors: Bret Easton Ellis, Mark Lindquist and Jay McInerney. Her novels are based on a satirical observation of the fakes, freaks and flakes who inhabit the city, a sort of “comic American misanthrophy.”
THE SCENE: Aside from her brat pack cohorts, Janowitz spent time in Warhol’s scene. Her novel Slaves of New York sent her into literary superstardom in 1986 when it was adapted into a movie, it was based on the central theme of how an insecure woman became a social being in the world’s most significant bohemian society.
WHY WE LOVE HER: We get her sense of humor and admire her fierce ability to stand out among a genre (satire) dominated by men.
